Frequently asked questions

  • What's the difference between Designer Roller Shades and Designer Solar Shades?

They share the same clean roll-into-a-header operation & design, but the fabric does a different job. Designer Solar Shades use screen fabrics rated by openness factor to cut UV and glare while keeping an outward view. Designer Roller Shades span the full opacity range, from light-filtering semi-sheers to room-darkening and near-blackout opaques, so they're the better choice when privacy or darkness matters room by room. For a west-facing Bay Area living room you might want a solar screen; for the bedroom, a room-darkening roller. We often install both in the same home and coordinate the look with vertical shading on patio or sliding doors for a Whole House Solution™.

  • Can roller shades give true blackout for a bedroom or media room?

A roller shade on its own gets close, but light always slips around the sides and bottom—no matter how it's mounted, that gap exists on any roller. For true blackout in nurseries, primary bedrooms, and media rooms, we recommend adding custom drapery or covers for side and sill channels that frame the shade and block edge light. An outside mount also helps by overlapping the opening. We'll ask how dark you actually need each room during the consultation and spec the hardware to match.

  • What's the difference between a cassette and exposed roller?

It's about how much of the mechanism you see. An exposed roller is the most minimal—the tube visible, which was popular in midcentury homes. A metal fascia is a slim aluminum face that hides the roller for a clean, tailored line. A fabric-wrapped cassette covers the roller in matching fabric for a soft, built-in look that fits a variety of rooms.

  • How do I keep roller shades clean, and is the operation guaranteed?

Routine care is easy—regular light dusting, a gentle pass with a vacuum brush attachment, or compressed air handles most homes. For marks, spot-clean with a soft cloth, blotting rather than rubbing. On operation, the clutch system is engineered for smooth, even lift. As an authorized Hunter Douglas repair center, we also service lift issues in-house if a shade ever needs adjustment.
