Types of Window Treatments for South Facing Windows

You don’t need a compass to tell if you have south-facing windows—just follow the sun! Your southern windows bring in the brightest sunlight for the most extended period of the day. This orientation is ideal for creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere, but these benefits also come with some downsides—excessive heat, solar glare, and UV exposure.

Hunter Douglas NewStyle® Composite Shutters near Burlingame, Los Altos, Menlo Park, and San Carlos, CA

At our four convenient locations, Rebarts Blinds and Shades Store helps clients make the most of their windows with custom solutions from Hunter Douglas. We’ll shared several of our favorite types of window shades for direct sunlight, and we can personalize them however you like.

Designer Roller Shades with Duolite® for South-Facing Windows

Hunter Douglas Designer Roller Shades have a single panel of fabric for a minimalistic aesthetic and easy control. They come in over 350 fabric options, ranging from sheer to room-darkening opacities.

These roller shades can be enhanced with the Duolite® system for added light control. Duolite® combines two separate fabrics into one shade: a light-filtering and room-darkening liner on one roller. Choose from prints, patterns, textures, and other designs to match your decor.

  • Horizontal orientation.
  • Widths: 12" - 115".
  • Heights: 12" - 120".

Vignette® Roman Shades for South-Facing Windows

Sophisticated and versatile, Vignette® Roman Shades from Hunter Douglas are another excellent choice for south-facing windows. We offers them in two styles:

  • The first is a rolling style with a 4” full or 6” flat fold that rolls into the headrail.
  • The second, a Stacking Style, has a 4” full fold that stacks beneath a low-profile headrail.

Order either in different opacities and stunning fabrics like tweeds, natural weaves, and silks. These elegant shades offer UV-resistant fabrics and don’t’ have exposed rear cords. You can also order the fabrics in cut yardage, which is ideal for creating matching fabric accents.

  • Horizontal orientation.
  • Widths: 12" - 140".
  • Heights: 12" - 144".

NewStyle® Composite Shutters for South-Facing Windows

Solid hardwood shutters have timeless beauty, but we don’t recommend them for south-facing windows. They’re less resistant to constant, bright sunlight, heat, and moisture. But don’t worry, because NewStyle® Composite Shutters look like genuine wood and offer the durability of vinyl.

These faux wood window treatments have 2 ½", 3 ½", or 4 ½" louver sizes and superior craftsmanship with Truemill® dovetail construction—same as our 100% hardwood option. Their Finetech® finish, a micro-smooth satin coating, resembles finely painted wood.

  • Horizontal orientation.
  • Width: 7" - 288".
  • Height: 12" - 116".

Which Type of Window Should I Choose for My South-Facing Windows?

Those three types of window treatments are all excellent choices, and here’s how you can select the right one for your home:

  • Roller shades are well-suited for minimalistic decor and offer many fabric choices. However, their width ranges are smaller than Hunter Douglas Roman shades and composite shutters.
  • Roman shades have a sophisticated aesthetic and a softer appearance. We like them in more formal settings, like living rooms.
  • Shutters are a classic choice. They’re attached to frames that get installed on windows.
